Meet our Team

Our swim teachers ooze passion and expertise!

At Swim Works we don’t just recruit the standard swim teacher, all of our teachers are experts in their fields.

Our teachers have diverse backgrounds, which range from early years teachers, child development practitioners, mermaid teachers, snorkelling instructors and holistic therapists, to name but a few. And on top of their standard swim qualifications, our teachers are also lifesavers, DBS checked, and first-aid trained.

Babies

When to Start

We’ve published a recent blog which helps guide you through when to take your baby swimming for the first time.

Settling In

Babies may be unsettled and can get tired towards the end of a class. Don’t worry, this is quite normal. If baby does cry, we are here to support you with our soothing and calming holds and moves.

If you feel you or your child are getting overwhelmed by all the new surroundings and you wish to step out of the pool and sit on the side to watch for a while that’s absolutely fine, just let your teacher know. Sometimes 20 minutes is enough time for little baby’s first few swims.

Please do chat with us prior to your lesson if you need any additional support.

Feeding

You can feed your baby poolside and it’s nice and warm. We are baby-led in every way and help you recognise your baby's unique behaviours and subtle cues.

New to Swim Works?

First-time swimmers, we welcome you! Know that we believe in the blend of feeling safe and familiar, as it makes for a great start to anything new. You might feel "new" now, but as the weeks pass, you will find your swim confidence grows

Anyone who would like to, is welcome to view our facilities before their lesson, meet or talk to their teacher, or enquire about our Zoom welcome Q&A opportunities - just get in touch to find out more.

We can do Taster Sessions (for £5) and we are happy to offer them in classes where there are spaces. But do be aware that, for many little ones, confidence builds over time, so we do recommend you come to more than one class.

Download and read our 🔽 taster sessions fact sheet to find out more about why this is so important.

When it comes to your child’s first swim, get them involved in the process to help grow their confidence:

• Talk about swimming at home, look at videos, photos or memories of swimming

• Invite them to help pack their bag

• Let them choose their favourite character towel and swimmers

• Bring their favourite shampoo or soap from home (familiar smells evoke security)

• Try on swimmers at home to get comfy in them before you swim

• Come early, get used to the environment - explore the changing rooms and the waiting area together

The most important thing to put in your swim bag is your time - we all need time to feel comfortable and children develop a sense of trust and confidence when they aren’t rushed.

New adult swimmers, rest assured that you can always stand up in our pool and you will never be asked to do something you are not comfortable with.

Swim Nappies

Our strict happy nappy swimwear policy for all children under 4 means our pool is kept super clean. Babies and toddlers wear a swim nappy as the first layer and neoprene shorts (happy nappies) as the second layer if they are not potty trained. When potty trained our little splashers and swimmers up to the age of 4 years, just wear the neoprene over shorts, Splashabout call theirs 'splash shorts' or lots of our swimmers wear the neoprene shorts called Jammers.

Forgot yours? We have spare swim nappies, happy nappies and towels - just ask a member of staff for help when you arrive.

Top tips: try everything on before your first session, and wear swimmers under your clothes to arrive "swim-ready".

Equipment and Buoyancy Aids

At Swim Works, in our Baby and Toddler classes we use pool noodles/woggles, with our unique holds and moves, we don't use arm bands. So our little swimmers can experience the water safely with you and learn all about their own balance and buoyancy.

In our Little Swimmers Advanced, Swim Stars and Swim Academy classes we will start off using AquaPlanes in their lessons – we sometimes call these "rocket packs".

Rocket packs are lightweight and comfy to wear and give just the right balance of safety and buoyancy. We provide these, and all of the swim equipment in our classes, so you don’t need to bring any other aids (just what is on your checklist, refer to the dropdown menu 'What to Bring' above)!

Missed Lessons

We do offer our Baby and Preschool swimmers the opportunity to make up a couple of missed lessons.

Please find our video here which shows you how to book and cancel.

We ask you to book no more than two catch-ups per swimmer per term and these are on a first come first served basis, they are a mixed class where we tailor the activities to suit the individual child.

Classes are released each week for you to book, we are unable to pre-book dates or transfer classes for you. Everything is online and easy to access for you through our BOOK NOW system (please watch the video for clarity on the booking process).

Our catch-up classes are free at Swim Works as an additional benefit, but please note they are not guaranteed as per our Ts & C’s.

For our Swim Academy swimmers, we understand that you might have to miss a class during the term due to family events, self-isolation or illness. We are sorry that we cannot provide refunds, credits or transferable classes – please see our Terms and Conditions to learn more.

Pool Rules

Footwear

All wet areas of Swim Works are shoe-free! Please remove outdoor shoes in reception when you arrive. We recommend you bring some indoor / pool shoes to change into (like crocs or sliders) as these are non-slip. Floors are often wet, and they help keep feet clean and dry all the way back into your shoes and socks at the end.

Eating and Drinking

A full meal before swimming is not recommended, but a high-energy yummy snack before or after class is always good. Don’t forget to include yourself too! Please eat outside our changing rooms only, as inside we operate a strict no eating policy for cleanliness and pool hygiene.

Please Remove!

Refrain from wearing perfume, creams and oils (there are showers to use before your swim). Also remove make-up, watches and jewellery.

Take Care!

You’re responsible for yourself and your child throughout the centre and safety in our lessons is paramount. Remember, floors can become slippery when wet and we recommend wearing pool shoes.

Spectators

We welcome parents or relatives to be involved and watch our classes from our viewing windows to keep distractions to the minimum.

We also have upstairs seating at Rugby with CCTV setup to watch the lessons.

Swim Academy Trackers

Those parents with children in Swim Academy, did you know that you can access the teacher’s notes via your online trackers? Go to the Book Now page on our website, click the green log-in button at the top. Use your email address and PIN to log in - your PIN is found at the bottom of your email booking confirmation. Once logged in you can view your child’s tracker, see notes on when they’re likely to move up to the next level, and more. If you need any help - just let us know!

Swim Stars

Swim Stars is a new class at Swim Works which is similar to a Swim Academy lesson except the grown up / parent is in the water supporting their child. Be sure to arrive early to allow plenty of time to get ready and prepare your child with their rocket pack, swim hat and goggles (pack and hat provided by us). Please read our recent blog for more information on preparing for your first Swim Stars visit!

Illness and Conditions

During our re-enrolment process, please disclose any medicals or diagnoses that may affect learning to swim, we operate a strictly confidential process of storing data. Please read carefully our Ts and Cs regarding medical issues, for serious medical conditions during the first 5 weeks of term, part refunds can be given with a doctor notes.

From time to time your baby or child may get a runny nose or a cold and many of our swim families ask if they should still come swimming. We often ask you to determine if they are well in themselves. If your baby or child has green snot and/or a temperature, we advise you to not come swimming.

We ask you not to attend swimming if you or your child has been unwell with sickness in the past 48 hours or had diarrhoea within 14 days of their swim lesson.

For those with eczema conditions, we welcome you to try a class as our swimmers find our special pool water not harsh on their skin. Our pool has a state of the art UV cleaning system, plus a fast flow water rate to keep it super clean and filtrated, so your skin isn’t left smelling of chlorine.

Medical advice has been updated on the swim guidance for verruca’s, please refer to this article by British Swimming. Speak to your medical professional as there are many treatments available from your local pharmacy, verruca socks are now generally not recommended.
